About Us

The Stewart Historical Society is a non-profit organization in Stewart, British Columbia, Canada, located at 703 Brightwell Street. 

Our dedicated board of volunteers work closely with our staff and community, maintaining four specific areas: 

- History Museum 

- Gift & Souvenir Shop

- Community Programs and Fundraising Incentives

- Education

Our mission is the preservation of the history of Stewart, BC and surrounding areas. 

The purposes of the Society is:

(a) To document, collect, preserve, and house objects of archaeological, anthropological, and historical interest, and well as archives of the Stewart, BC/Hyder, AK area and beyond;

(b) To document and assist in the preservation of historical buildings and landmarks throughout the Stewart/Hyder, Portland Canal area;

(c) To obtain and display information respecting natural history, in particular of the Stewart/Hyder area;

(d) To assist in the establishment, management, operation and expansion of a museum, archives, and/or heritage park;

(e) To encourage and promote heritage and museum education programs;

(f) To co-operate with and negotiate exhibits to and from other museums;

(g) To undertake other such activities, which from time to time, may be deemed appropriate. 

Our mandate is to preserve and promote the history of the Stewart - Portland Canal area. To encourage and enable learning for both residents and visitors by providing access to archives and materials and to foster community pride.
